Back at the Kitchen!

Late post *peace!* We're 7 months pp now and have made/experimented more in the kitchen :)
----

Hurraaay for me! Hahaha..6 months post-partum and I finally found the extra time and energy to work my butt off in the kitchen. How I missed this special place where, for me, the "magic" happens hahaha.. :)

No meal "meal" for now, just reheating things (LOL), tinkering with the Zojirushi rice cooker and baking.

Here's a 'shabby' looking lactation brownies that I made -- specially infused with galactagogues. I added Flaxseed and Brewer's Yeast to help me in my breastfeeding journey. Oh I hope it works! Otherwise, I still love it because it's healthy and tasty ☺️ You can find the recipe here: (https://community.babycenter.com/post/a24430091/here_it_is_lactation_brownie_recipie)

Wishlist for Baby & Pregnancy #2

A couple of months ago, a young relative asked me when I was having a baby shower. Well actually at that time, I haven't really thought about it. And now that I AM thinking about it, my thoughts are along the lines of "is it necessary, for a second-pregnancy?"

Well who knows, right? But between me and Daddy A, we feel that it's mostly not very important at this point. You see, we (sige na nga I na lang hahaha) have been OA parents with our first born, trying most nice things we have read about. And and and....our families & friends have been so incredibly generous that we feel we really don't lack much. Crib, push chairs / strollers, baby carriers, infant clothing, I think we're pretty much set ;p

But there are things a mother could still wish for. Not necessarily material things this time.

So whatever I'm blogging about right now are things that would definitely make this pregnancy and new birth a little bit more comfortable :)

1. VBAC

...or Vaginal Birth after CS. This has been my #1 wish ever since we started planning for our new baby. Of course, conditions on the day and our doctor's instructions would greatly influence whether we'll be successful with VBAC or have to resort to CS; after all, safety of mom & baby are of prime importance. But please Lord, we're really praying for a successful VBAC.

Note: Recovering from a CS operation is really hard (huhubells) so it's not something that I would voluntarily choose, if given an option for this second birth.

I'm currently reading Ina May Gaskin's book on Childbirth and am very inspired with all the birthing stories. Also learning a LOT from the 'midwifery model' of labor and delivery especially how to best "flow" with nature's design. Gosh! I wish I have read this too for my first pregnancy :)

P.S. I really love my Kindle Paperwhite from Amazon. Most nights back in 2014 it was the only thing that kept me awake while breastfeeding little Z!

We've also attended our second round of birthing class, this time with Ms. Rome Kanapi. These were some of the best 6 Sundays of my pregnancy wherein we just relaxed with the rest of our classmates but still learned a good deal about pregnancy and childbirth. In our case, it was so much more than a refresher course...and I'm so glad we invested time in this again. I also love the support group with the rest of our classmates, sharing along as some of them have already given birth :)

Please pray for our success in this endeavor :)

2. Packing efficiently for 2 kids!!

Admittedly, I'm an overzealous packer and I try to provide for every contingency hehehe...this is something that perhaps my dad and my hubby would never get about me. Yeah, why can't they understand the need for 3 bags for me and 3 bags for Z??

Though I've realized the folly of my ways, I can't promise to be content with just bringing 1 bag. 1 bag?!?!?!?! Kidding! Yes I know, tiis ganda ang peg just to calm my mind that I'm not missing anything.

Since we'll be having 2 kiddos soon, a toddler to be carried by Daddy A and an infant to be strapped on me..well, why don't we just consolidate their things in 1 bag and let Daddy A carry it on his back? Great idea, right?! :D

Seriously now, this may have been one of the best ideas I've gathered from mommy communities in the net. And quite practical here in the Philippines too!

Right now it's a toss up between the truly cute and big Jujube BRB or a North Face Recon backpack. I like the designs of the Jujube, as well as the thoughtful pockets, organizers and accessibility to our things, while babywearing. But it's too expensive for a bag and I have read mixed reviews about it's durability. The North Face pack doesn't at all look like a diaper bag but certain models have proved to be quite roomy as well and many reviews attest how sturdy it is. Bonus points is that if it the bag survives past the toddler stage, we may very well be able to use it for day trip hikes with the kiddos!

Jujube Be Right Back
Northface Recon

Well I'm stil doing research about this very small dilemma so if you have any recommendations, feel free to leave a comment. And please leave tips on how to really pack efficiently for 2 kids without having to bring the whole house!! :D

For the meantime, we'll be using Z's old diaper bag to bring with us to the hospital :)

3. Cloth Diapering (CD)

Of all the things we weren't able to soldier on with our stint as first-time parents, we definitely failed in this aspect. Yes we tried it and we have about 8-10 cloth diapers in total but from my research (and I don't intend to hoard or be addicted to it), there should be at least 21 daw (tama nga ba?) for 1 child due to the nature of cloth diapers (wash & wear and tell me, how often would we really be able to do the washing hehe).

Admittedly, cloth diapering can be intimidating at first especially if you have to research the different kinds, suppliers, methods of care, etc. And probably cumbersome during the course of using - just imagine the difference between handling poop from cloth diaper and disposable diaper use. But if you really really think about it, using it multiple times, passing it on to the next baby, or maybe even destashing/reselling in the future...not bad at all!

Not because it's cute, not because it's in...we have been doing disposable diapers for almost 3 years and very partially on the cloth diaper stash. I feel guilty already for our contribution to the local landfill..besides, it's a gift that would keep on giving through poop and bad times hahaha..I know, not funny :p

So I guess we have to do more research to be more successful CD'ing this time around. ;)

4. Woven Baby Wrap

Okay here's my disclosure, we really love babywearing!!! We might not have an enormous stash but what we have right now (Mamaway sling, Saya SSK, Baby K'tan Mesh, Lillebaby Tie The Knot, Tula Baby-sized carrier, Lillebaby Toddler-sized carrier) would definitely be able to tide us over for the different seasons of baby #2's first year.

So why am I still putting this here? (1) There's something that I seriously want to try which can be used from birth till toddlerhood - and that's the woven wrap (2) so we can have more wash days and ensure cleaner carriers for both babies. Which I'm sure will be used 24/7 especially for baby's clingy days (i.e. the whole first year) (3) It just looks so magical - diwata levels, ganern! Hahahaha :D

***Hint, hint Daddy A! This could be your Christmas or Valentine's present na hahaha :) ***

5. Breastfeeding Success

Despite our initial challenges in breastfeeding when Z was a newborn, I think we pretty much exceeded our goal then. There were days when Daddy A would give me the option of buying formula milk but with God's help, we were able to manage one day at a time until we reached 28 months of our breastfeeding journey.

There were many things, big and small, that we had to sacrifice but in retrospect, it really is worth it. I just hope that our upcoming new breastfeeding journey with baby #2 would be successful too. That I would also be able to give our baby the best possible nutrition especially during the most crucial stages.

We kindly request your prayers to this request. Our Lady of La Leche, please pray for us :)

========

Oh boy, today marks the 37th week of our second pregnancy!!

Which means we are now term, so anytime from here onwards will come a new addition to our family and changes to our family life. I honestly don't know what to expect anymore - save for crazy sleepless nights, crazy sleep-deprived days with newborn+toddler in tow and crazy breastfeeding 24/7.

I used to think that when Z becomes a toddler, my life can go back to "normal". That's so silly of me to expect hahaha, it will never go back to what it was before and maybe that's what life is all about. Moving forward, meeting new challenges, living & loving every moment.

I guess when Daddy A and I are 80 then we'd both look back and just smile at these crazy and happy times :)

Hay sus, hormones...making me cry now :) Happy tears...wish us luck! :D

Happy 18th month, dearest Z!

“Babies are such a nice way to start people.”

-Don Herold

We didn't really have anything to celebrate Z's 18th month with over the past weekend (oh, we did celebrate with a goddaughter's 1st!) . Although I had it in mind to at least get a small cake, Daddy A thought it's unnecessary. So let me just mark this milestone (it is, for me!) with this blog post.

If you noticed, I stopped giving a month on month update about Z. That's on account of her growing to be her own person, and respecting her privacy and sense of self. Well I really am not sure she'll be thrilled to see her mom document every fart or tantrum, this side of the web! Hahaha :)

But Z being 1 and 1/2 years old, to this mom, feels like the cusp of finally graduating to full toddler hood. It is indeed a milestone worth remembering, worth documenting. I don't know what this really entails. I just feel happy, proud and a bit melodramatic that we seem to be entering a new phase.

On a personal side, there are some dynamics of our baby care that's probably about to change. I dunno how soon but let me just assume that it's SOON enough, to treasure every bit of these special moments.

BABY WEARING

Okay, we love our Tula baby carrier, still do! But, Z is getting heavier (and that's a good thing) and her Tula is getting smaller for her (even with the free-to-grow extension). I'm just worried that in a few more months, my back won't be able to take babywearing anymore.

At this point, I'm seriously contemplating getting a Tula Toddler carrier, an umbrella stroller or maybe just bring back her Safety 1st stroller (which I think we haven't used in a year). Or all of the above!

BED-SHARING & CO-SLEEPING

Yes, as I shared in my previous post, we're still a bed-sharing and co-sleeping family. Sometimes it's a PITA especially when she decides to go perpendicular to us (if you have a little one, you'd understand why we dare not move her back -- baka magising!). King sized bed, really a good decision ---- no, this is the BEST decision ever! Hahahaha. Oh and if you want to know, we've taken out the bed frame to prevent falls, and of course (of course!) laid out colorful rubber mats around the mattress, in case she accidentally rolls to the floor.

What about her crib? Yup, what crib??? I guess she'll only take to it if she's really passed out asleep from her day's activities. Otherwise, I try for a "successful transfer" at least 3x a week so she'll get used to it. But 3-4 hours tops she'll be up and let us know (read: cry) that she wants to go back to our bed...maybe she thinks it's her bed?!?

BREASTFEEDING

Yep, still at it! Though I really wonder, does she still get a lot / something from it? It's not a 24/7 thing anymore but anytime we're out, I still have to be in breastfeeding clothes. I guess this is the major reason we're still bed sharing and co sleeping, it is by far easier to just lift the shirt than to get up in the middle of the night and prepare milk.

Right now I'm researching how to ease into weaning, both for her and my sake. I hope she doesn't get withdrawal anxiety and I won't get mastitis or anything remotely related. But, do I have to pump? Or maybe just get a weaning for dummies book...hehe, kidding! :)

Another consideration is how long will it take before she self-weans? My dad is betting Z will have me go to school when she wants mommy milkie! Hahaha..So while occupied with those thoughts, my mind wanders into this territory: what if, on the flip side, she suddenly stops..suddenly weans completely, cold turkey? Afraid!! You see, Daddy A himself considers this as a special power or gift of moms to babies. Both for the nutritive part and also for the ability to get her to sleep, to behave, etc.

Anyway, I just hope that it'll be a smooth transition when the day comes. I'll forever cherish that I was able to breastfeed at least this long!!

So what else is up?

We recently finished her Bert Lozada Swim School (BLSS) My Baby & Me program. She likes it so much I guess we have to enroll again :) Also loving her Gymboree Play & Learn sessions. I'm so glad that she's able to and actually wants to make friends with other kids :) --->stay tuned as I blog on these

We're training her to always be in the carseat when we travel. So far, 20-30% progress! Yikes! Aaaand, thoughts about school/education are being especially considered...double yikes! :)

If you want to talk with Z, here's your ultimate guide

Right now, Z is really a talker --> and I mean that in the best positive sense of the word. If you say anything to her, 98% chance she'll be able to parrot repeat it back to you. [Proud and gushing parent alert] Not only that, she's actually able to make small talk / communicate with us. And memorized a book (to her Lolo's pride), and sing-hum-babble nursery rhymes in tune, and remember people's names, and so much more!!

So without further ado, here are some words from Z's baby dictionary:

a-awi - go away; as in the rain rain go away song
abu - love you!
a-e-i - jollibee
ambum - album; yes we pore over the wedding and birthday album almost every night hihi
apul - apple
badet - violet; her Leap Frog stuffed animal
banens - violence. which she says while covering her eyes when she knows the TV is on
bigat - heavy
bijou - video
bikit - biscuit
bimbim - driving
bishet - bracelet
buntun - belly button
ding ding ding - hindi / no
duwing duwing - drawing as a verb or when she sees a pen
edi yaw - ayaw or no; i don't know who taught her this but that person probably wanted her to say "edi wow!" instead
edu - hello
haaak - hug
ingkong - aircon
kanggang - karga / carry
klay klay - suklay / comb
mamay - Mama Mary
mang - ninang / godmother
me-me - sleep
mina - Davina
minggo - Bingo (was his)
nimu - Name-o!
nonna - lola
nonno - lolo
one tu ti...maaaaaii - one to three smile!
pata - garapata / dog tick
pooot - fart
sary - rosary
shism - excuse me
tititititar - twinkle twinkle little star
umbowi - Gymboree
wiko wiko - hickory dickory

and so much more! :)

Oh I just love this child....dearest Z, know that we are sooo proud of you and we love you always! Happy 18th month my (not so) little one! Looking forward to more (shopping? haha) adventures with you and Daddy A! Haaaaak! <3

Heart of Mine...Valentine's Day Musings

So...it just occurred to me that I haven't blogged about this happy Feb-ibig month! Oh dear, my "single" self would not have approved! Haha! Well I would've told her anyway that things do change once you get married and have a kid of your own!

And so this is how our happy heart's month went by. Not a date set in place - which is honestly okay, since hubby and I were both swamped with work! Yet regardless this seeming "lack of romance", oh this year's Valentine's is just something to remember :)

First we celebrated the night before Vday by ordering in from Pancake House, one of my fave restos! While I couldn't decide between the different house specials, my hubby just had his eyes on this fish lumpia set. I, on the other hand, finally decided to get the 2-piece Pan Chicken set with bread and salad on the side. All of these were just sooo yummy!! I especially loved the generous servings, the gravy flavor and the surprise kick in the salsa!

Pancake House's Fish Lumpia with Mango Tomato Salsa

Pancake House's 2-piece Pan Fried Chicken with Bread and Tuna Salad

Here we are enjoying our pre-Vday dinner at home..and looking back, I couldn't quite remember how or if we did celebrate last year!!

On the day I was pleasantly surprised - not with flowers - but with two very nice tokens. While having our breakfast, two very important packages arrived just minutes from each other. First, the CD's containing Z's first birthday photos - oh what joy! :) We were not expecting them at all to be delivered this month so it's a major thing for this mommy...thank you so much Happy Folks Studio!

Official birthday photos! Yeah!!

The next package that arrived was my online purchase from Elin. My hubby was suspicious because of the smug smile on my face that I couldn't conceal! Haha...eh alam na niya ang ibig sabihin niyan :) I eventually had to let him know what the paperbag contained - honesty is the best policy, right?

To justify, we are still breastfeeding and I need a few pieces to update my working wardrobe. Besides, I just love their nursing wear - simple, fashionable and discreet at the same time!

I was happy as a bee and I spent the morning watching the Radio Romance Vday flick. Haha, I just found out that they shot some school scenes at DLSU! Wow!!

Well flowers still came! But the runner did not understand A's instructions so he bought 3 dozens as is. We decided we should gift it to our female relatives instead and we did some DIY arrangements using parchment paper, ribbons and lovey-dovey stamps :)

Before we went to my parents' place, we delivered these pretty flowers to their equally beautiful recipients.

That night we invited my parents over for a double date with Z :) I'll be sharing with you our experience over at Agico Vegetarian Cafe in another blog post so watch out for that ;)

First Valentine's date with her Daddy and her Lolo
AGICO Vegetarian Cafe

We capped off the celebration with another yummy and nice family lunch at Hai Shin Lou at The Makati Place's City Club...oooohhh, this is another nice place I'll be sharing through my next blog post.
Hai Shin Lou at Makati Place's The City Club

All in all, my heart is just too happy for how our Valentine's went by. Pancake House pa lang masaya na ako but Agico and Hai Shin Lou? Totally unexpected, maybe haphazardly planned but these are experiences and memories that truly give me joy.

Such a contrast from how we celebrated Vday when we were still bf-gf. Before the plan was usually "magpakalayo-layo" sa family, mala you and me against the world lang ang drama. Hence we'd flock to malls and busy restos which are filled to the brim with couple looking through rose-colored glasses. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, but it's just something that doesn't appeal to the "mommy me" at the moment. Now that I'm a mom, I'm partial to spend special days with the whole family. "Now it's us, now it's we". Things really do change..and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Looking forward to more Vday celebratations with the whole gang! :) How about you, how did you spend your Vday this year? :)

Oh my teething child...that and other ails :(

[LATE POST: This happened before her 1st birthday...]

I thought we were done with the ouchies in her 9th month...not quite, not quite!!! The little one's teething again and it looks worse than the previous one. During those times she's just beyond fussy...I just look up and pray to God to help me find out what's wrong, help me soothe her.

So I turned to the one thing I knew that would give her the best comfort - breastfeeding! Haha..it's actually like a comfort blanket for the both of us, especially when this mommy doesn't know what to do anymore. According to my hubby, it's my 'agimat'. But that particular night, breastfeeding didn't do it's usual magic. Fact is, I feel her gums were really tender and sore to even allow her to latch. She'd just come really close to the breast, attempt to latch and then back away while shaking her head and still sobbing ;(

Baby wearing before sleeping

I just wanna 'hang out' mommy...

Hey daddy please stop taking photos..
I tried to cradle her and sing a lullaby but she was fighting the cradle hold. At that point I really did not know what to do. I know she's not hungry so food is ruled out. She's definitely sad and sleepy but our usual sleep routine didn't seem to hold. What gives?

As a last resort, I reached out for our Tula baby carrier. She did not refuse. I belted out a few of my "best singles" hahahaha and she seemed to like it :p I carried her to the living room and the kitchen, talking to her, even reciting her Muddypaws story. Okay at that point I tried to gamble taking her out of the Tula, crossing fingers and hoping she had been pacified enough.

I really hoped she would sleep by then. We were after all, trying for an earlier bedtime...

So after removing her from the carrier and placing her on the bed, she latched well and it was the start of a better night for us. Oh babies, sometimes we'll never guess..now I'm truly convinced that toys and more toys are not the important thing...when it comes to comfort we can truly rely on a parent's love, powered by babywearing and breastfeeding :)

Oh, it's mommy's request pala
The following morning we went to have her checked by the pedia. Turns out this is a complicated case of teething, fatigue from the holiday travels, colds and a bacterial infection. Gaaaaahhhh!!!!

Since this is a late post, I'm now able to tell you that Z's well and good. After a round of antibiotics, nebules and the gum-soothing paste (which we weren't able to use), and well-deserved rest the little lady was back to her old self. She just lost a few pounds but she got it back again with a better appetite.

So here are the things that this episode taught me:

  1. Breastfeeding is best for babies but it isn't a cure-all. Every now and then, they can get sick too!
  2. Always check with baby's pedia. All the while we thought it was just another teething phase but through the eyes of an expert, other problems were uncovered. And because of that, we were able to act quickly to nurse her to health.
  3. Holidays are fun times, the holidays are family time but babies are still babies. Their little bodies can't take too much travel, late night outs, being around smokers (who are not necessarily smoking, but there's still an effect). They'll hardly complain if we keep tagging them along. We should respect that and put in mind that we are their caregivers, we shouldn't let them down.
  4. Okay on a practical note, I sorta learned how to administer meds via dropper to a hesitant (to put it mildly) baby.
  5. Make sure that we follow doctor's orders especially with the dosage and times. Yes, even with a sleeping baby!

The morning after: Nebulizer time

Going back to work

In a few winks, I'll be officially part of the workforce again...huraaaay!! :) I consider it a blessing that despite choosing to be on a long hiatus (a year to be exact), I am still able to go back to the university doing what I love. And perhaps new perspectives on living, teaching and mothering are in order.

I've been mulling over the course designs, schedules and activities, I'm sure this would be fun!

A big HOWEVER for me is having to leave Z to the help. We've done it before, yes, but not in a very structured and frequent fashion. I know I shouldn't worry but sometimes I just can't help it. Would she cry her eyeballs out if I'm not back in the next couple of hours? Would she refuse my expressed milk? Would she even sleep? Would she be making 'tampo' when I return? Could we make it through the term?

So as much as I want this post to be helpful to moms who are going back to work, I think this one is really for me, to get everything off my mind and have the assurance that everything's gonna be alright :)

1. I love working! I believe it is a healthy expression of ourselves - passions, advocacies, talents, flaws and gifts. While I'm a person who can easily go on overdrive, I choose to control myself. Hence I choose to teach part-time so that as much as I can avail of that self-expression, I can still be very available for my family.

2. I love mothering and breastfeeding! And Z still does too! This even played a big factor in choosing my schedule at school. There must be a nursing session before I leave home, a couple pump session at work and immediate latching when I get back home. If other moms are able to make it work, I feel all the more empowered that our nursing tandem can do it too!

So more fluids for me, signing up to use the lactation room and making sure my pump parts are ready. I even bought extra parts so I wouldn't have to bother with washing and sterilizing them at work.

3. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
There are a lot more I could worry about but what's the use? I choose to trust Jesus that this anointing is from Him and as long as I do my best (especially with preparations), I can entrust Him to do the rest.

Wrong Ramen at Burgos Circle BGC

Another food blog post...yesss!!! :) After spending our afternoon viewing a condo unit listing at Forbeswood Parklane in BGC, our feet naturally gravitated (rightly of course!) to Wrong Ramen. Well, upon my brother's suggestion too!

It was a Friday so the place wasn't as packed. I assume the younger ones (gulp! I'm about 30 in a few hours after all) are busy making the rounds in their gimik circuit! Oh what am I saying? Forgive me dear readers, I was a 'diretso uwi' lass in my adolescence.

A quaint and cute place, I should say. I would've taken more pictures but I had a mildly cranky and very sleepy baby with me so I just satisfied myself with shooting from where I was seated, mostly. That, and I was quite famished as well :)

Thankfully, the food did not disappoint. We were easily full in minutes and we finished our meal in between taking care of Z alternately. Though the place is not humongous, there were still a lot of wonderful and quirky deets I haven't shot, too bad! Well then let this serve as a mental note to go back and try the rest of their WRONG RAMENS :)

Thanks to my brother, A, for the treat! Enjoy the pics folks! :)

Galit galit muna mga 'teh? A and V busy choosing their wrong ramen.

Of course, MMM and Z have got to join the photo-op! Here we are, breastfeeding baby inside the Tula. Ssssshhh, do not disturb!

I haven't mastered the baby bag yet! Can't believe we ventured out without a single toy on hand. Good thing Z is easily amused with everyday things. She just kept going at it, doing the Harry Potter swishing of her giant fan, ala magic wand!

Uh oh, someone is hungry! I think she's wondering if they have baby ramen too. Sorry my love, maybe next time :)

Wrong Ramen Tantanmen for V.

The F.U. Ramen for the rest of us. Because how could I say no to bacon? Bacon!!!

Nursing Station: Powerplant Mall

Rockwell's Powerplant Mall has one of the comfiest nursing stations I've been to! It's located at the 2nd level near National Bookstore and Healthy Options and is just across the comfort room.

What I love about it:
  1. Spacious - definitely so much bigger than a bathroom stall...methinks 1 private station has the equivalent total floor area of 3 bathroom stalls.
  2. Comfy breastfeeding chair - not a lazy boy but I say it's terrific when I just had to sit back and pump!
  3. Comes with a diaper changing station - yuuuup! Because babies poop and pee and sometimes it just happens right when you are nursing them. Or right after you've just changed their diaper! Hahahaha :)
  4. Has its own lavatory - for pumping mamas this is a huge plus! Oh, if you guys only know the 1,001 pump parts we have to clean - soap up and dry. And of course, just refer to #3 - there are times when wet wipes just won't cut it.
  5. Friendly and service-oriented staff - :)
I just love comfortable spaces such as this. Makes my job of producing milk quite stress-free, even inside a busy mall. Happy nursing and pumping! :)

Milk Mama Diaries: Our Breastfeeding Saga

Welcome to the Milk Mama Diaries Carnival (August). For this month, we write about the World Breastfeeding Week 2014 - Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal for Life and share how breastfeeding can help the Philippines achieve the 8 Millennium Development Goals developed by the government and the United Nations. Participants will share their thoughts, experiences, hopes and suggestions on the topic.

Please scroll down to the end of the post to see the list of carnival entries

As I write this post, I'm also watching over my 7-month old daughter who is now crawling more than creeping on her play mat. On occasion, she manages to humor me and do a quick plank or downward dog pose. If she's in a really playful mood, she'll go even further and attempt to coast on her knees! I can't believe how far we've come from our early weeks and days together just a few months ago.

You see, this wasn't always the case with us. She wasn't always this cute baby with chubby cheeks. She wasn't always this amazing ball of energy, eager to expend every bit for each developmental milestone. My baby definitely wasn't one to take on nursing / latching / suckling / breastfeeding with ease and much gusto. I on the other hand, wasn't someone who had lots of free-flowing breast milk. Well truth be told, I think I just have ample supply for my baby's needs. And in my younger years, I wasn't even for nursing in public (NIP) or even for breastfeeding itself! Long story short, our breastfeeding saga actually started with myths and actual "breastfeeding failure", as most others (including myself) would have called it.

When I found out that this year's Milk Mama Diaries Carnival is about how breastfeeding can help achieve the 8 Millennium Development Goals by the government and the United Nations, I initially thought it would be quite hard to find a connection. But after reading some more, I felt certain that sharing our own experience could definitely help others - especially new mommies who are probably struggling with the same challenges we faced. This is not a run down of breastfeeding benefits and how-to's, and definitely not a put-down for moms who were not able to breastfeed. Far from it! This is simply a mom's no holds barred breastfeeding story - our struggles, failures, learning how to do it, getting better at it and keeping at it. I hope this encourages moms and the people around her to give breastfeeding a chance.

Our Story

Let me take you back to the start of our journey. I was an excited first-time mom who was about to pop!  I felt so ready, so prepared and quite successful already! And why should I not feel that way? After all, my husband and I have attended seminars on pregnancy, childbirth and even breastfeeding. From the different types of hold and positions (cradle, cross-cradle, football, side-lying), correct latch, schedule, troubleshooting..ahh, we'll be breezing right through. We 'knew' everything from cover to cover, or so we thought!

We planned and prepared for a normal and unmedicated birth. After being stuck in 1cm for a whole day out, I was admitted to the hospital and was immediately hooked on IV and Pitocin. But after 24 hours in the hospital with labor not progressing, we were confronted with the need for a C-Section. I was prepared for anything BUT a CS! And I did not know it then but now I realize how giving birth via CS could jeopardize breastfeeding success. I mean, it is possible but it definitely wouldn't be easy...and how! You could count on your aching incision, general lethargy and all the IV needles to make early breastfeeding such a burden.

Unang Yakap - I was unconscious when Z and I first met; but I'm glad the medical team followed my request for Unang Yakap and immediate latching which were included in my birthing plan
I could hardly stand on my own the day after the procedure. When nurses came and told me I could start breastfeeding, I was so excited! This is it! Although I missed the Unang Yakap in the operating room (I panicked so they gave me something that made me sleep!), I could make up for it now! So I was walking hunched over to the breastfeeding chair, a nurse advised me to use the breastfeeding pillow and somebody handed me my baby. Like an eager mother, I was waiting for that first latch....and waited...but baby didn't want to latch, or didn't know how. Hmmm, how could this be? Lactation experts in the seminars told us that this would be part of a baby's instinct! Weren't some babies even crawling towards their mother's bosom, and latched? That's the start of me questioning - what's wrong with my baby? what's wrong with my breasts? what's wrong with me? Nobody wanted to admit it but I guess the drugs used during childbirth somehow passed to my baby and made her lethargic.

And so that's how we rolled for the whole time we were at the hospital - baby was only able to latch for a few minutes only after a nurse or a lactation midwife would assist us (read: maneuvering my mammary gland towards my babe's mouth). In I.T. parlance, we were on a "plug and pray" basis - with them manipulating the latch and me praying hard that we get it right already, that my milk comes plentiful already, that we wouldn't be a "breastfeeding failure" any more.

Our earliest breastfeeding sessions - when baby was fussy and crying hysterically, it was my husband who suggested to do skin-to-skin and get her to latch because, "she needs her mommy and she might be hungry"
Oh, and I also suffered from Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy so baby's blood glucose/blood sugar was heavily monitored from birth. Every 4-6 hours, a nurse would come and prick her heel to get a reading. There was a point when it was dropping significantly which was cause for alarm to the medical team. Probably enough for them to recommend a stop gap, an intervention. And doubts filled us again. What's wrong with our breastfeeding? Isn't it supposed to be the best for my baby? But we stuck with it. Even if I didn't know what the outcome would be.

The Intervention

So I received a call from the pediatrician. From what I remember, she discussed Z's blood glucose condition, the dangers of hypoglycemia to her brain and body functions and the 'simple' remedy - administering glucose water to regulate her glucose levels. The simple remedy that I chose not to accept. When she heard this, I sensed the change in the tone of her voice. To my postpartum self, it sounded sort of like a threat, and I wasn't comfortable with it. I felt like a bad mom, that I'm forcing to make breastfeeding work even when they had a solution already. That if my baby's blood sugar continues to drop and something happens to her, it would be my fault. And then they said I had to sign a waiver. But as I said, I stuck with breastfeeding, yeah - at first it was out of pride (i.e., that I'm a breastfeeding mom) or my stubbornness. I desperately tried hard, in my hospital bed, to search the web for evidence so I can justify my decision to the medical team, but to no avail. I just knew that given our conditions, it would be the best for my baby and I wanted us to have a fighting chance so she can have the best start - regardless of her lethargy and blood glucose levels.

After the call, the doctor came over and visited us. She reiterated the details of our phone conversation but this time with a more 'caring' tone. She was probing where I got my information and convictions from. Maybe she was trying to see how come a first-time mom would be so opposed to what they, experienced and seasoned professionals, are trying to do. I don't usually like confrontations and getting in the way of other people's work (especially if they're the experts) but in this particular instance, it was empowering. Even if I didn't really know what I was doing! And may I add, it felt right.

Seeing that I was so convinced we could make breastfeeding work, she let me be but she assigned a lactation midwife to always monitor us and help with the latch, should we need it. But not before the caveat that they will still monitor closely (pricks were gonna happen, still) and if things don't improve, they really have to do what they gotta do.

Challenge Accepted

I don't know what got into me but I thank God for giving me the resolve to soldier on with breastfeeding. I didn't have evidence of it too at the time but giving glucose water to a baby just didn't sound right. As a pre-diabetic / GDM mom, I knew just a few things on the effects of sugar or glucose. That sugar will just give a temporary high; I thought it might not stabilize Z's glucose level, and could possibly be more detrimental. That sugar provides empty calories - how do you nourish a hypoglycemic newborn with only that? And I felt it could impede our breastfeeding journey - less latching = less milk production.

So the "medical intervention" for baby is still breast milk. I'm not sure how you perceive our photos but let me tell you that every nursing session then was a struggle. I walk towards the breastfeeding chair with optimism, only to be beaten down by our challenges. Every nursing session made me feel like crying. At times I really did. I cried for my sore nipples. I cried because I just wanted to sleep and get some rest too! And most of all I cried because of the very real possibility of failing at this.

I even made an SOS call to Ms. Lita Nery, a lactation consultant, to help me in the hospital. I asked why I did not have milk yet. After she did her lactation massage and assessed the situation, she confirmed (and we saw!!) that I had milk and was even already engorged! She then helped me with some techniques on breast massage, proper use of warm compress, hand-expression and the actual use of different breastfeeding positions. Thank you so much!

Mommy, Z with her great grandmother and Ms. Lita Nery

That's why I'm so thankful for the lactation midwives and consultants who were really heaven-sent. With a few maneuverings, they were able to get baby to open her mouth enough to be able to latch. They were supportive, very much so. But they were few, and were only available during the day. One was even talking to my baby and said, "You know baby, you're very lucky. Your mom is trying her best to breastfeed you." Oh my, I really wanted to break down right then and there. How could she say that, when I didn't have a clue what to do! This was in between her doing hand-expression of colostrum for me. Whatever little amount we expressed, we used the syringe to feed my baby. It was such a simple affirmation that time and time again made me feel brave to give breastfeeding one more day,and another, and another. At night my husband and I tried to manage on our own, and sometimes with the nurse's help. Again the why's - Why is this so hard? Why didn't I know about these things? Why don't these things (breasts) come with a user manual?

Breastfeeding - all wired up and bandaged post-preggy me and baby

A few cc's of colostrum made us celebrate with joy. It was all the more a happy moment for us when the nurses finally told us that Z's blood glucose level was already stable.

My heart was happy that we were hours away from being discharged. Yet at the same time I was sinking to a feeling of helplessness - no more lactation midwives or nurses to call on when we need to latch. It's now really just me and you baby!

Breastfeeding at Home

You'd think by time of discharge I'd be a semi-pro breast feeding mom. We did spend 5 days in the hospital, after all. But it was my husband or mother-in-law's turn to be a latching expert, day or night at home. On the few times I was able to get her to latch, it was just by chance. Yikes! I thought we might end up quitting altogether. There were even times I resented breastfeeding. They said she would be hungry after 2-3 hours but golly this baby wanted me every hour! Sometimes we even had a 2-hour session from 1AM to 3AM. It wasn't until Ms. Lita confirmed that it was normal too, that I felt okay again.

But Z lost considerable weight. Much more than the acceptable limit and again they were looking into breastfeeding as the culprit and glucose water as the immediate solution! I decided to change her doctor and got a recommendation for a breastfeeding friendly pedia. It was such a breath of fresh air to have someone who is on your team. The first thing our new pedia did is to observe us as Z latched. She then checked my breasts and gave us her recommendations. And the nice thing is she let us continue breastfeeding, but with modifications. We were on block feeding and we were told to watch baby's output (her poop) if it changes color from green to yellow; which means there was no hindmilk/foremilk imbalance. In a few week's time, we were on track with baby's weight gain. Sure there was still soreness and some pain but before Z turned a month old, I could confidently say that we were really getting the hang of it!

Breastfeeding beyond 6 months

I'm happy to say that at 7 months, she's still exclusively on breast milk. If I may say so, it has definitely helped my child deal with her early blood sugar woes. It has done wonders for our bonding and I feel blessed that we are still able to do it. And I'm pretty sure it has done wonders too for our finances as we are able to allocate the money (otherwise spent on formula product) for our savings and other expenses.

We did not get to practice football or cross-cradle hold but now we get better sleep by doing the side-lying position at night and our standard cradle hold on all other times. We still bring our fluffy breastfeeding pillow when we're out and about. I express milk through breast pump only when needed hence I only have ample stash for emergencies.

Breastfeeding technicalities aside, I think we're okay. The latch is great and I pray she doesn't bite me when she starts teething. But do believe me when I say that breastfeeding moms at this point still need your support, prayers and sometimes, even your acceptance.

Admittedly, I was only breastfed until my third month and was formula-fed afterwards. That's why I understand when our elders would advise to wean baby from the breast and introduce formula. But I intend to breastfeed until at least Z's second year. And I'm afraid that's where the problem would lie.

While breastfeeding per se is not a cultural norm, I believe it is more difficult for those who choose extended breastfeeding. You'd hear anywhere from "You don't have milk any more" to "Your milk does not have nutrients any more" or "Breastfeeding a toddler doesn't look nice". Awww shucks! What's a breastfeeding mom got to do? Feed her baby of course!

There are a lot of things I would like to suggest but I guess it boils down to proper information dissemination, understanding and empathy. Right now breastfeeding advocates who came before us are moving mountains! We have nice nursing stations in malls, hospitals, select offices and schools. There are wonderful support groups both local and international who passionately help new ones like me to this aspect of mothering. My take is to include breastfeeding in the school curriculum alongside sex education. Maybe we would be able to eliminate the feeling of it being immodest. Maybe then the youth would understand the most normal and basic way to care for the baby brought about by procreation. Maybe moms in the future wouldn't wonder why it's hard or why they were not handed out a manual.

Breastfeeding while waiting for our turn at the doctor's clinic
Until then, I hope we can all support all mothers especially the soon-to-be moms & new moms with their breastfeeding goals. Believe me, it is hard as a new mom to push for this when in yourself you know that 'you don't know everything'. And mommies, it really isn't easy so please don't give up just yet, can you try for one more day, for your baby?

And this is how we achieve the 8 Millenium Development Goals, not by making a clean sweep of everyone but by starting with those who are close to us. One successful mother-child breastfeeding story means we are a step closer towards our goals.
